Artist statement – The World Around Me
I named my
shadow box “The world around me”. My shadow box is one that provides a good
example of how globalization is spreading throughout the world and that the
spreading of globalization has a positive effect on a nation. My shadow box
also shows that Indonesia has globalized in many aspects. Along with a
globalized culture, this shadow box also gives details to my personality in a
globalized culture. I have divided my shadow box in two parts: the part that is
behind the cover of the glasses is food products that are both globalized and
native to the Indonesian culture. The other part of the shadow box that is in
front of the cover of the glasses is other items as: soap, shampoo, glue and a
box of ear phones that I got from the Korean airlines. These items are also
both globalized and native to the Indonesian culture.
The soap, shampoo and the tube of glue are local Indonesian items that we can buy here in any general store. However, that mini blue colored box of earphones is globalized because those earphones are actually made in Korea. The blue background represents my interest in swimming. The calendar that is on the background is not random. The month on that calendar is November and the date that I circled with a red marker is 20. I did that because my birthday is on 20th November. I put food products on my shadow box because I love eating foods of different sorts. I put a cover of glasses, which is made in India, in the middle because I consider India both as native and a foreign country. It would be foreign to me as I am living here, but it would be native to me as I am originally from India.
On the other half of the shadow box I put a tube of super glue. I did that because my ambition is to become a mechanical engineer when I grow up. The mini blue box of earphones tells that I like travelling. The red marker on the bottom left side of my shadow box represents that I am quite studious and do care about my education a lot. The case of the reading glasses actually represent me surrounded by both globalized and native materials.
